MTG Booster Types

Welcome to the exciting world of Magic: The Gathering boosters! Whether you’re a seasoned player or new to the realm of MTG, understanding the different types of booster packs can enhance your collecting and playing experience. In this guide, we’ll delve into the five primary types of MTG boosters: Beyond, Draft, Set, Play, and Collector. Let’s explore what each pack offers to help you find the one that best suits your Magic journey.

Magic: The Gathering – Assassin’s Creed introduces the Beyond Boosters, a new type of booster for Universes Beyond. These boosters are non-draftable and tell a story through the opening experience. Each Beyond Booster contains up to 4 rares and offers a unique mix of cards, making it a thrilling addition to any collection. Packs usually contain 7 cards and contents generally look something like this: 3 uncommons, 1 basic land or scene card, 1 rare or mythic rare, 1 traditional foil card, 1 Booster Fun card, and 1 non-foil token or art card.

Draft boosters are the cornerstone of MTG pack opening. Primarily designed for Draft and Sealed events, they contain 15 cards: 1 basic land, 10 commons (one possibly foil), 3 uncommons, and 1 rare or mythic rare. Plus, there’s a marketing card or token. The card distribution may vary with special cards like dual-faced ones, depending on the set. Perfect for traditional draft experiences and building your collection!

Introduced with Zendikar Rising, Set boosters break away from Draft balance rules. Ideal for those who love cracking packs, each Set booster contains 12 cards: 1 art card, 1 basic land (sometimes foil), 6 commons/uncommons, 1 unique common/uncommon, 2 wild cards of any rarity, 1 rare or mythic rare, 1 foil card, and 1 marketing card/token. This complex distribution caters to the joy of discovering diverse cards and rarities.

The Play Booster is an evolution of the Draft and Set boosters, designed to combine the best of both. It addresses several challenges faced in the MTG ecosystem and is tailored for both enjoyable pack opening and Limited play. With a mix of commons, uncommons, rares, mythic rares, and exciting inclusions like cards from The List, Play Boosters are set to redefine the booster experience. Each pack contains a curated selection of 14 cards, balancing playability and collectability.

The Collector Booster is a treasure trove for players who prioritize collecting unique and rare cards. Generally the most expensive pack type, these packs are typically packed with 15 cards and 1 foil token card. These boosters offer a high chance of foils and exclusive variants, making each pack opening a thrilling experience for collectors and enthusiasts.
